    This is probably the most important benefit of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's been proven time and time again that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts in the world. There isn't one top MMA fighter in this world that does not include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in his training regiment. In the cage and especially in the street, 9 times out of 10, the fight is going to the ground. That's why learning BJJ is so very important in self defense.
    Knowing how to punch and kick is great and can definitely help you get out of some situations. But if that is all that you know, as soon as the fight goes to the ground, all those techniques you have learned on your feet are useless. They just won't work.
    In BJJ, you will learn to to control and subdue your opponent. Plus, BJJ is the only proven martial art where a smaller person can defeat a bigger and stronger opponent.

    Learning To Deal With Defeat

    This too is very important because defeat is something that nobody can avoid. There isn't one person to ever walk this planet that hasn't been defeated or failed at doing one thing or another. I don't care if you are an Olympic Gold Medalist wrestler or "the greatest street fighter of all time." When you first start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you WILL be defeated. That's just part of the process. There's no getting around it. But this doesn't have to be a bad thing.
    You can't expect a white belt who has been training for 3 months to beat a black belt that's been training for ten years. But as long as this white belt continues to go to practice, train, take notes, ask questions, and never quit, he will eventually start closing that gap. He will be getting submitted less and less and start submitting opponents more and more.

    Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best forms of physical fitness you can possibly get. Unless you're a wrestler, it's impossible for you to understand until you step on that mat. Running, biking and lifting weights are great, but they can not get you the results that BJJ will. Even Crossfit isn't in the same league as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Starting with the warm ups, then the drilling and eventually the rolling (live wrestling). You will be using and conditioning muscles in your body that you have never worked out before in your life.
